Greene County’s sheriff today applauded a tractor-trailer driver for his efforts to save a county investigator after the tractor-trailer and the investigator’s car collided in a deadly accident.

“We’re thankful for the truck driver,” Greene County Sheriff J. Scott Haas said. “We’re thankful that he did everything he could do.“

Chadwick Alan Carr, 31, died from injuries he received when his sheriff’s car swerved in front of the tractor-trailer on Route 230 just 2 miles east of Stanardsville. The truck driver, Edwin Kent, 43, of Harrisonburg, was not injured.

The accident occurred a tenth of a mile east of the intersection of Route 630 and Dundee Road, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Frederick Tyler. Debris from the accident could still be seen from the second green of the Greene Hills Golf Course this morning.

Carr was traveling east on Route 630 around 1:22 p.m. Thursday when he lost control of his 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix and left the road, Tyler said. He overcorrected and drove into the path of Kent’s 2006 Freightliner tractor-trailer, which was traveling west.

The truck crashed into the passenger’s side of Carr’s vehicle, Tyler said. Both caught fire and ended up in the ditch on the westbound side of Route 630.

“The cause of the accident is still under investigation,” Tyler said. He declined to comment on whether alcohol, drugs or cell phone use were factors in the accident.

“We’re not going to go into details about the investigation,“ Tyler said.

This article was edited to correct the route number of the road the accident occurred on.
