A recount of more than 316,800 votes cast in the Nov. 4 election between U.S. Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr., R-Rocky Mount, and Democrat Tom Perriello is underway in Albemarle County Circuit Court.

Heading into the recount, Perriello had a lead of 745 votes over the six-term incumbent.

Three teams of officials are tabulating results from Tuesday’s recount in the 22 localities of the 5th Congressional District, including Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene and Nelson.

Once the teams finish their work, they will pass on the results to another team who will add together all of the vote totals and pass on the results to a panel of three judges.

Officials with both Goode and Perriello’s campaigns have contested a small number of ballots, which should be resolved today.

The three-judge panel will reconvene early this afternoon. They are expected to declare a victor in the race.

Lee E. Goodman, an attorney for Goode, said he expects both Goode and Perriello to pick up votes in the recount.
