Council calls for gay rights measure

» 2 Comments | Post a Comment

The City Council unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday that requests the General Assembly protect public-sector workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Equality Virginia, an advocacy group that seeks equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, wrote the resolution. It first was presented to councilors last month.

The city government and schools already protect its workers from being discriminated against based on sexual orientation. The Virginia Human Rights Act also protects workers from being discriminated against based on certain grounds, such as race, religion or gender, but there is no mention of gender identity or sexual orientation.

Repeated attempts to marginalize an issue because a dwindling few don’t get it—or worse, perpetuate their not so soft bigotry—are tiresome. Go beat a dead horse elsewhere.

I wonder if there was another group who decided to have sex another way or came up with a new gender definition and gave themselves some type of name, would you issue them some type of resolution, or do you draw the line anywhere? Welcome to the circus!
