U.S. Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr., R-Rocky Mount, raised roughly $120,300 more than his challenger, Democrat Tom Perriello, in the most recent campaign finance filing period.

Goode, a six-term incumbent, collected $532,750 in contributions between July 1 and Sept. 30, according to documents filed Wednesday with Federal Election Commission.

During that same period, Ivy resident Perriello raised $412,488.
Since the campaign for the 5th District seat began, Goode has raised $1.35 million and Perriello has raised $1.32 million.
Perriello has raised far more than any of Goode’s previous opponents.

Both candidates have spent slightly more than $1 million so far in the race.
Heading into the final stretch of the campaign in the Nov. 4 contest, Goode has more than twice as much cash on hand as Perriello.
Goode reported having $686,051 on hand on Sept. 30, while Perriello had $321,233.

Two recent polls indicate that the race is tightening, but the GOP incumbent still continues to enjoy a sizable lead.
