Several localities in the Charlottesville area will receive funds from the federal economic stimulus package, U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Ivy, announced Tuesday.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes $144,000 worth of Community Development Block Grants for Charlottesville.
CDBG funds can be used for a wide range of projects, including transportation, education and housing. A Charlottesville spokesman could not be reached for comment by press time Tuesday.
Other Charlottesville-area localities can apply to the state for their own share of an additional $5.2 million in CDBG funds secured as part of the stimulus package.
The package also includes Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grants for several localities. These grants can help local law enforcement hire new officers, as well as support drug treatment and enforcement programs, crime prevention and domestic violence prevention programs and more.
Albemarle County is eligible to receive $113,138 in the law-enforcement grants. Buckingham County is eligible to receive $13,191; Charlottesville $230,080; Fluvanna $18,772; Greene $18,264; and Nelson $10,147.
