Perriello votes in favor of health care bill

Perriello votes in favor of health care bill

U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Ivy, voted in favor of the sweeping health care reform package that narrowly passed the House of Representatives late Saturday, drawing cheers from his supporters and outrage from opponents.

Perriello—who held 21 town hall meetings over the summer to gather input on the bill—said the measure was a “profound shift away from the status quo towards progress and better, cheaper health care for more Americans.”

The bill, he said, will make health care more affordable for the middle class, provide security for seniors and reduce the federal deficit.
“Whether for or against health care reform, most people in the district asked me to fight for deficit reduction, a fair shake for rural doctors, and no federal funding for abortions. I helped to score major victories on all three fronts.” Perriello said in the statement. “Today’s vote on health care legislation came down to a simple choice for me: do we sit back and let premiums skyrocket for middle-class families and small businesses, and watch the cost of prescription drugs bankrupt seniors and the cost of health care bankrupt the federal government? Or do we take this step today to support middle-class families and small businesses by encouraging competition to bring down premiums?

“The time to act is now, because Virginians deserve a competitive health care market,” he continued. “They deserve access to affordable health care, and they deserve better choices when purchasing insurance.”

Republicans roundly condemned Perriello’s vote.

““Congressman Perriello let us down today,” said state Sen. Robert Hurt, a Chatham Republican who is seeking the GOP nomination against Perriello. “ He held 21 different town hall meetings this summer where central and Southside Virginians voiced their deeply-held opposition to a government takeover of healthcare; instead of listening, he chose to ignore our concerns – putting his liberal beliefs and party loyalty ahead of what’s best for us.”
Hurt said the bill will hurt struggling residents  and damage the economy of the 5th District, which includes runs from Charlottesville to Danville.
“Make no mistake: this bill is a devastating blow to our economy at just the wrong time. With job losses continuing to mount, Congressman Perriello voted to raise taxes on small businesses,” Hurt said in a statement. “With seniors getting squeezed, he voted to slash Medicare benefits. With Virginians working harder for less, he voted to give taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits to illegal immigrants. Because of our congressman’s actions, one-sixth of our economy may be subject to government control.  The consequences are monumental: premiums will rise even faster, bureaucrats will be in charge of healthcare decisions and the quality of patient care will suffer.”

Katie Wright, a Republican National Committee spokeswoman, echoed that sentiment in a statement.
“Tom Perriello voted to turn one-sixth of the U.S. economy over to government bureaucrats,” she said. “A vote for the Obama-Pelosi health care bill means higher taxes on Virginia’s families and small businesses, cuts to Medicare for Virginia’s seniors, and an increase in premiums when Virginia’s families go to the doctor.  Congressman Perriello has pulled the classic Washington move – he says one thing to his constituents, but when he is back in Washington, he votes against their interests.”

Perriello said he successfully won inclusion of several ideas in the bill that were raised during his more than 100 hours of town hall meetings.
“Our work on this bill is not over,” he said in his statement. “As health care legislation advances through Congress, I will work with my colleagues in the Senate to push for better inter-state competition. But I am proud of the changes I fought for. After hearing from my constituents during over 100 hours of town hall meetings in August, and by continuing those conversations in the months since, I worked to include their ideas in the bill, pushing for legislation that now protect Medicare, ensure deficit neutrality, encourage wellness and preventive care, and protect small businesses.”

foehammer I knew that remark about the General’s would get some type of insult from you.
Certain people think the giant defense budget is okay.
I do not like our money being spent by fools and war mongers.

Gordie, reading your last post I would say you are a danger to all freedom loving people everywhere.

foehammer first off, I am a happy guy and love life. May not always like what it deals me, but that is another story.
For you to even suggest I am unhappy, it makes me think you do not like that I counter what you have to say. I am not the one trying to prove my self worth by posting 4 to 5 posts in a row in the same article, when no one else has written anything.

But lets get off the personal stuff. I made a mistake by agreeing your middle name was “Selfish Jerk”.
When my opinion is the middle name is just “selfish”. After all “self-centeredness and lacks humility” is too long for a middle name.

Have a beautiful rainy day. The rain did not down my spirit yesterday. I just stayed in the house and wrote comments in the Daily Progress, watched old westerns. Was disappointed I had to turn off the Ed Show and Hardball. Both of them were acting like idiots.
But then Countdown and the Maddow show made up for it.

What do you think of the President telling the Generals to go back to the drawing board. I loved it.
I have never heard any General say they are loosing. They always say they need more troops.
Well that tells me their strategy is wrong and they are loosing.
Maybe the President is finally get comfortable in the job and there will be change in DC.

Sorry I got off subject.

Ari, sorry to hear about your misfortune. Did the guy who hit you have insurance? Did this accident happen in Virginia? It is manditory to carry liability insurance in this state. The senerio you endured is why we have vehicle liability insurance. If it was the other guys fault, your hospital bills should have been payed by him or his insurance company. The lawers involved should have gotten you compensated for loss of work and pain and suffering. The accident you describe should have evolved hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars in compensation. Certainly, thats a poor substitute for the life you had before your accident, but money is what we are talking about here…isn’t it? Know this, if you would have been hit like that in most any other country in the world, there would have been no recourse for compensation what so ever.

I dont think that the government has the right to force their helth insurance policy on me. I’m not the only one who thinks that way. How does that make me a selfish jerk.

Gordie, I’m sorry you are so unhappy.
May I suggest that you take a few moments first thing every morning to write down everything you are grateful for, just make a list and think about it. I think you will find in doing this that your outlook on your life will brighten. smile

Foehammer - I don’t generally resort to personal attacks but you are a selfish jerk!

I have lived a good life.  I eat well, exercise and even teach Sunday School.  Yet, I was hit by a drunk driver and it put me out of work for years and put our family into major debt.  I spent years fighting for coverage of basic care and rehab.  We paid over $12,000 in co-pays and denied coverage on top of our 17,000 policy.

Health care should be part of the “commons” like roads, electricity and police.  Profit has no place in health care.

Foehammer,
Ask hospital administrators, doctors, and other health care providers….the system can’t maintain the status quo.  The health care is good, but the cost of medical equipment, malpractice insurance, health care insurance is over the top.  The fact the the uninsured use the ER overburdens the staff, and passes the cost onto us, the taxpayer, if they can’t pay.  The high cost of health care insurance doesn’t go toward state of the arts health care….it goes toward the overhead cost of running the insurance system.  There needs to be a balance of profits and regulation.  We’ve had good health care providers all along, it’s the ever-increasing cost that’s killing the system.  The White House isn’t manufacturing this as there are many medical profession groups that support it to.

Albert,
Have you noticed that the social progressives always use somebody elses money to make them =selves feel better.

An unfortunate decision by Mr. Perriello, apparently too panicked by a need to DO SOMETHING to understand the economic realities of this bill will make the system worse for everyone over time while doing absolutely nothing to lower costs, except perhaps by making people give up because of the waiting lines.

It’s a sad day when even Democrats don’t comprehend the problems with tax exemptions and subsidies in the health care system.  Instead, we have infantile “progressives” who want to feel better about themselves and their country more than they want to donate to charities or give actual independent thought to problems and issues.
