Woman in ‘fair’ state after wreck
An Appomattox woman was in “fair” condition at the University of Virginia Health System late Monday following a one-vehicle accident at about 9 a.m. in Nelson County. Two children in the vehicle were uninjured.
Goldie Y. Brown was flown by helicopter to the hospital.
According to Virginia State Police Sgt. David O. Cooper, Brown was traveling south on U.S. 29 in northern Nelson near Route 790 when her vehicle ran off the road in the rain.
The 2001 Lincoln Navigator hit a guardrail, spun in the road and hit the guardrail again before overturning. As it rolled, Brown was ejected, and the vehicle landed on its wheels.
Brown was not wearing a seat belt at the time. The two children, ages 4 and 6, were both in child safety seats.
Cooper said speed, rain and worn tires were factors in the accident, which is under investigation by Trooper J.D. Allen. No other vehicles were involved.
Cooper noted that when conditions change, even though the speed limit may be 60 mph on U.S. 29, “that doesn’t mean that’s the safe speed — travel according to the conditions at the time.”
On a wet road, he said, drivers can’t stop quickly, and it’s easy to lose control, especially with worn or slick tires.
