Wal-Mart spurns Orange landowner’s offer

LOCUST GROVE — Wal-Mart has turned thumbs down to an offer from a landowner who said he has 2,000 acres farther away from a Civil War battlefield where the retailer hopes to build a Supercenter.
The Wal-Mart proposal has angered historic preservations, who contend the 138,000-square-foot store near the Wilderness battlefield is an affront to history.

The land proposal comes from an Orange County man, Charles “Chip” King, who told the Free Lance-Star of Fredericksburg that his offer is a “win-win solution.”
Wal-Mart’s Keith Morris said the company had already reviewed the site and ruled it out because the land is not zoned for commercial use.

Supervisors will have final say on the store.
