2 arrests made in Afton slaying

Two Nelson County men were arrested today in connection with last Wednesday’s death of 73-year-old Opal Page, of Afton.

Christopher Meeks, 18, of Shipman, and Austin Griffin, 20, of Afton, were taken into custody by the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office and both were charged with petty larceny, grand larceny, burglary and first-degree murder.

Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks said Meeks was found in Amherst County on Misty Hollow Road and Griffin was found on Crawford’s View Road, near his home in Afton.

Brooks said “tips and persistence” were key in finding the two men.

Both men are being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail and are tentatively scheduled for an arraignment on May 13.
