Disabled advocate to receive honor

Rose Williams, a local advocate for the disabled, today will receive the Jackie Crews Award for Excellence in Leadership from the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities.

“There is a body of evidence that brain differences in boys and girls are such that, to have one group as audience, you can tailor lessons in a better ways to capitalize on learning differences,” said St. Anne’s middle school head Fred Chandler. “We think it is worth trying out, but we are not committed to go beyond that if we don’t see that the benefits are great. I am fascinated and intrigued by the possibilities, but it is important to remember that it is an experiment.”

A man shot last week by police seeking suspects in the Interstate 64 shootings is still recovering from wounds to his arms and chest, his lawyer said Monday.
The man, whom both the lawyer and police would not identify, remains in stable condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center, officials said.
“He’s improving and he’s not on any life support,” said John Zwerling, an Alexandria-based lawyer. “He was shot in both arms and has a bullet in his chest.”

1st hearing held for suspects

Two teens charged in last week’s Interstate 64 shootings made their first court appearances Monday.
Slade A. Woodson, 19, of Afton, requested a court-appointed attorney Monday morning in Waynesboro General District Court. His hearing in Albemarle General District Court was rescheduled for today.
