Mark Warner passes the buck
I watched with interest Mark Warner’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.
Obama lacking military fortitude
The Russian bear is on the march again — invading Georgia and refusing to repair the damage caused, and also refusing to leave.
Room to grow in job market
More jobs suggests a healthier tax base. Certainly the state would receive more revenue in income taxes, but job growth also indicates that healthy businesses are generating other revenues, such as sales taxes, that come back to the locality.

Obama attackers getting it wrong
I am writing to take issue with a letter published on Aug. 11 headlined “Obama promotes class warfare.”
McCain’s choice of VP troubling
It’s obvious why John McCai’s choice of a running mate was made — to attempt to win some undecided supporters of Hillary Clinton.
McCain not served by experience
I refer to the letter “War hero hopeful worthy of votes” in the Daily Progress of Aug. 26.
Bad transport gets nowhere
Consumers around the world hungry for grain.

America needs help, and it is time for someone to say something.

For rapper, creativity comes in many forms
Sense it in the music, feel it in the video, hear it in the book; Derek Perkins wants the beat of his life, the tone of his philosophy to come through.
Is negative campaign only way?
Have we as American voters really become so cynical in how we decide whom to vote for that we believe the most effective method of raising oneself up is to tear our opponent down?
Debate refusal is damaging
Shame on Mark Warner.

Area must adapt to straying wildlife
Seven deer — impudent impediments ignoring traffic’s horns — dined on carefully manicured landscape as the quick red fox sprang across the road, yipped a pup-squeak and disappeared into the brush.
Condolences to Obama supporters
I have to sympathize with the Barack Obama supporters who are so desperately searching around to find the personal qualifications and achievement that justify his presidency attempt (“Barack brings real hope to nation,” The Daily Progress, Aug. 24). His most significant achievement in life to date has been to become a lawyer, thus giving him at least equal qualifications as the more than 1.1 million others that the American Bar Association claims to be the number of qualified lawyers in 2007.
Goode energy policy laughable
After reading the article Aug. 16 on Virgil Goode (“A Fight in the 5th: Virgil H. Goode Jr.”, The Daily Progress), I have but one question for: If Rep. Goode has such “consistent record” in Congress on the energy crisis, as he said, then why do we have an energy crisis?

Youth baseball needs changeup
Have you heard about the Connecticut kid who was so good, he was banned from the pitching mound in his Youth Baseball League?
Class warfare claims are unfair
I was frightened by a letter published Aug. 11 (“Obama promotes class warfare,” The Daily Progress).
Obama campaign lacking substance
Beware a partisan supporter’s endorsement of a candidate based on the thin air of imagination, starry-eyed interpretation of facts and inept analogy.

Curb obesity in kids with walking
Almost daily, we read of the appalling increase of childhood obesity and also of the ever escalating cost of fuel and taxes.
5th District race offers a clear choice
Voters in Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District must choose between two strong candidates. One, the incumbent, panders to our baser instincts, while the other appeals to our better nature.
An approachable icon: Remembering LeRoi Moore
The horn lies silent and the reeds are still, but LeRoi Moore’s music lives in the hearts of others.

Responding to the conflict between Russia and Georgia, Sen. McCain says “we are all Georgians.”

Barack Obama has revealed two very special characteristics both in his personal conduct and in the conduct of his campaign.
