Candidate brings creative thinking

I have known Dave Norris for more than 10 years as a friend and a fellow activist. I am thankful that Dave is running for the Democratic nomination for re-election to Charlottesville City Council, because he is always asking the right questions and bringing discussion back to what best serves the community’s values and strategic goals.

On the 50-year water supply plan, Dave has continually pushed for an accounting of how increased conservation and efficiency efforts over the coming years can reduce the projected demand figures. His efforts on this issue are guided by his strong sense of environmental stewardship and fiscal responsibility.

Why should we build a huge, new dam if we are able to repair and enlarge the existing dam and supplement the plan with dredging?

Dave’s focus is also on increasing use of public and alternative means of transportation. That is why he has consistently opposed the Meadowcreek Parkway. He pointed out that, at best, the new road would temporarily alleviate traffic for some residents on Park Street north of the U.S. 250 Bypass.

In the long term, this road would channel a huge amount of additional traffic through the heart of downtown Charlottesville, threatening to interfere with the businesses and community activities that are currently thriving there.

No matter the issue, I know Dave is working hard to engage experts and members of our community to find a good solution. I’d encourage others who value hard work, creative thinking and concerted action on the important issues facing the city to vote for Dave Norris in the Democratic primary on May 9.
