County ought to break cycle of just taxing and spending

In “County mulls once ‘unthinkable’ cuts” (The Daily Progress, Oct. 17), we continue to hear only two options from our elected officials: one, reduce spending; the other, increase taxes. No one seems to examine our supervisors’ chronic bad management decisions.
I propose three changes:
First, it’s time Albemarle managed the budget like any responsible family would and make hard choices in the short term.
Second, county leaders must become pro-business for the long term, but not blindly so; quality of life is also very important to us all.
What we need is balance and perspective.
However, it’s time we recognized that our representatives make choices that send businesses like Home Depot and Cracker Barrel (and their jobs and tax payments) to Waynesboro, Fluvanna and Madison.
Last, let’s agree that next month we’ll elect real leaders in Albemarle.
