Obama’s liberal morality found to be lacking

Thomas Sowell’s column “Obama’s character not presidential” (The Daily Progress, Oct. 18) addressed a major reason, among many, why we believe that Sen. Barack Obama would be a poor choice for president of the United States — namely, his character.

Mr. Obama has stood against many of the age-old proven morals that have contributed to the strength of our nation. It is not just his support for sex education for kindergarteners, but the whole spectrum of issues related to sex and life itself.
He consistently voted to deny the unborn and survivors of abortion their basic rights. On four occasions as an Illinois legislator, he voted against laws designed to provide equal medical care for babies that survived abortions. He claimed that he did so because the provisions were not the same as the Born Alive Infant Protec-tion legislation (adopted by the U.S. Senate 90 to 0), but as committee chairman in 2003, he made Illinois Senate Bill 1082 identical and then voted against it. (Information from http://www.ilga.gov/senate/journals/.)

The reality is that he has hedged on the truth of his voting record until the irrefutable facts became public in August.
He also is a leading supporter of the Freedom of Choice Act, the consequences of which would make the horrendous act of partial-birth abortion legal again, repeal all parental-notice laws on abortion and provide unlimited tax funding of abortion, removing these issues from the state’s prerogative and the will of the people.  In fact, he is endorsing the ever growing, me-first philosophy, even for minors.

He vows that he would quickly work to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal law that endorses the traditional definition of marriage and, further, allows states not to recognize same-sex marriages from other states; the list goes on and on.
Evidence clearly shows that Mr. Obama is not a consensus builder and confirms that he truly is the most liberal senator in Congress, a man who will lead us into a polarized constituency that moves farther and farther from our national motto, “In God We Trust.”

We believe that Sen. John McCain has demonstrated to a much greater degree than his opponent the character to lead our nation.

Your letter shows that you do not understand Obama’s stand on some of the issues.  In a few cases, he is not as extreme as you think.

“Obama is a leading supporter of the Freedom of Choice Act, the consequences of which would make the horrendous act of partial-birth abortion legal again, repeal all parental-notice laws on abortion and provide unlimited tax funding of abortion, removing these issues from the state’s prerogative. . . “

MAYBE.

“He vows that he would quickly work to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal law that endorses the traditional definition of marriage and, further, allows states not to recognize same-sex marriages from other states . . .”

GOOD.

Evidence clearly shows that Mr. Obama truly is the most liberal senator in Congress . . .

I HOPE SO.

. . . “a man who will lead us into a polarized constituency that moves farther and farther from our national motto, “In God We Trust.”

I DON’T THINK SO.

We believe that Sen. John McCain has demonstrated to a much greater degree than his opponent the character to lead our nation.

NOPE.
