Scottsville home to great teachers

I would like to commend that teachers and staff of Scottsville Elementary School for the planning, creativity and energy devoted to organizing the recent Math Night at the school.

Dozens of parents and children enjoyed a variety of imaginative, practical and hands-on activities that demonstrated the importance of math for daily life. I commend Principal Nancy Teel, and the entire SES staff, for the well-organized and inventive program. I never thought math could be so fun! 

As a parent of a first-grader, I am new to the Albemarle school system, but in the past year and a half, I have been consistently impressed with the quality education that is offered and, even more importantly, grateful for the attentiveness and care she receives from her teachers at a smaller community school like Scottsville Elementary.
SES is a vital part of the Scottsville community, and both the school and town profit from the relationship that they share. Because of its location within the community, the school benefits from the participation and support of residents who have not had children in the school system for years, but who still enjoy supporting the school through fundraisers, through tutoring and volunteering, and by cheering on students at school events such as plays, musicals, spelling bees and literary readings.

I encourage everyone to support their small community elementary schools, and to remind their school board and county supervisors of the numerous social and quality-of-life advantages of having schools located within a community, benefits that cannot always be measured monetarily, or in a cost analysis report.
