Lowry tops to lead Miller
The Samuel Miller District of Albemarle County has drawn three very different candidates. That’s given the voters plenty of opportunity to dig into the issues and weigh choices at this critical time for the county’s finances and future.
While recognizing the outstanding community service records of the other candidates, The Daily Progress gives its endorsement to John C. Lowry.
Perhaps because he’s running as an independent rather than as a party nominee, of the three contenders Mr. Lowry presents the most finely nuanced evaluation of county and district issues. His independent stance and thoughtful approach will be a valuable addition to the Board of Supervisors.
His career background in financial services also will bring welcome expertise to the board as it faces today’s critical economic downturn. His public service record complements this area: He is chairman of the county Economic Development Authority and former chairman of the airport board.
Smart economic development would be one of his goals. He’s right: Albemarle needs an economic development office that pro-actively seeks the right kind of business for our community; we can’t passively wait for it to come to us. Careful, thoughtful development is necessary to our fiscal health.
Mr. Lowry also believes that an already good county administration can be improved. He would look for efficiencies, but with a measured, thoughtful approach, without slash-and-burn dramatics.
For these and other reasons, we wholeheartedly endorse John Lowry.
