The beauty of science
Congratulations to the University of Virginia and Trinh Xuan Thuan, an astronomy professor and author.
Mr. Thuan has just won an international prize from a branch of the United Nations for his work in making science accessible to the general public.
Signals from American schools and from industry point to the need for a greater general appreciation of science. Without that foundation, we risk losing our technological edge and our position as a world-leading innovator.
It is Mr. Thuan’s work as an award-winning science and nature writer which earned him the Kalinga Prizes for the Popularization of Science from UNESCO, the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. He shares this year’s prize with Indian physicist and educator Tash Pal.
Mr. Thuan already has won the Grand Prix Moron, a French prize that is roughly equivalent to our Pulitzer. A native of Vietnam, he writes in French.
