The music of the highway

OK, so rumble strips get great reviews for keeping sleepy drivers awake and preventing wrecks.

But as musical instruments they leave much to be desired.

Musical instruments?

Yep.

In California (where else?) some city officials allowed Honda to pave a quarter-mile of road with a grooved pattern that was designed to play “The William Tell Overture” at perfect pitch.

There was one catch.

The “music” only played when a Honda Civic passed over the road at 55 mph.

We’ve heard of groovin’ to the music, but this is ridiculous.

Actually, that’s pretty much what residents thought, too.

Paving was completed earlier this month, but the musical interlude didn’t last long.

Neighbors complained that the pavement just emitted a high-pitched droning noise. Some said it kept them awake at night.

Guess there just weren’t enough Honda Civics on the road — at least, not enough moving at precisely 55 mph.

Lancaster city officials had the grooves paved over this week.
