Toscano earns voter support

The 57th District is fortunate to have David Toscano as its delegate. Voters should return him to another term in Richmond.
As a Charlottesville councilor for 12 years, including a stint as mayor, Mr. Toscano was known for pragmatic problem-solving in the present and far-thinking visioning for the future, accomplished with fairness, open-mindedness, centrism and civility.
He has continued that legacy in the General Assembly, where such values are sorely needed.
Mr. Toscano says that education is far and away the No. 1 issue among his constituents. He is committed to pre-school education, to boosting elementary and secondary education and to efforts to keep tuition reasonable for college students. He also correctly warns that Virginia needs to better encourage math and science learning if we want to retain a measure of leadership in high-tech industry.
Staying at the forefront of developing tech trends is key to future economic health. Mr. Toscano backs business development in technology, along with programs in higher education and public schools to provide the workers necessary for such businesses.
On transportation, he backs a balanced approach of some roadbuilding and some transit, along with practical means for funding these. This means raising some new revenue, potentially through adjusting the gasoline tax, which has been allowed to drastically lag inflation — a need few in Richmond are willing to admit.
We don’t agree with every stand Mr. Toscano takes, but we agree with many. Most importantly, we agree with the careful, deliberative method he uses to reach his decisions, and with his quiet, effective means of reaching out to constituents.
