Virginia’s unemployment rate edged higher in September, to a seasonally adjusted rate of 6.7 percent from 6.6 percent in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The rate a year ago was 4.1 percent.

The data show the number of unemployed rose to 275,900 in September from 270,900 in August. The figure is down from July, however.

The data are seaonally adjusted, which is a statistical correction that adjusts for the impact of normal seasonal changes in employment, such as the start of the school year.
