Patriots clinch crown

Nothing follows up an important, emotional win like another one. Ask coach Mark Ragland, whose Albemarle volleyball team knocked off Brooke Point on senior night, 3-1 (25-8, 25-9, 17-25, 25-11) to clinch the school’s first outright regular season Commonwealth District title since 2002 on Tuesday.

PREP NOTES: Warriors control JD race

Western Albemarle has established its place at the top of the Jefferson District, going unbeaten in its first seven games. The battle for second place is heating up though, with a pair of one-loss teams — Louisa County and Goochland, which are set to play Friday night.

Wendell Green enters his first season as head coach at Albemarle, as former head man Rick Vrhovac stepped down after his 2008 squad finished 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the Commonwealth District. Gone from last year’s roster are starting quarterback Jeremy Robinson, receivers Zach Vrhovac and Tyler Molinaro and key linemen Jon Pfeifer and Will Gimble.

The Chargers beat Albemarle 10-9 on Saturday in the state quarterfinals on the strength of junior attackman Brendan Waters’ game-winning shot two and 1/2 minutes into overtime.
