While just about everyone in Central Virginia is grateful for all the rain so far this spring, there is a handful of people — namely, area high school athletic directors — who wouldn’t mind seeing the precipitation disappear, if only for just a little bit.

It’s going to be a while before Western Albemarle’s Jeannette Fellows scores a bigger goal.

The Patriots combined solid performances by senior leaders Vince Coles and Tyler Molinaro with a big blast off of the bat of junior Rashad Talley to rally and eventually hold off the Wolverines, 8-7.

Albemarle was poised to make a statement in its first district home game of the season on Tuesday, and got huge games from each of its three senior team captains en route to a 4-1 victory over visiting Stafford.

Jordan Hill finished second in three events and seventh in another to lead the Albemarle boys track team to its first state championship since 1975 at the Group AAA meet at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.

After winning the Northwest Region championship by nearly tripling their next closest opponent’s point total (Mountain View), the Patriots are looking to bring home a state title.

After a long winter full of practice and conditioning, the Albemarle boys swimming team has been enjoying the fruits of their labors over past few weeks.  Last week, the Patriots qualified for the Group AAA championship. The team put together one last solid performance on Saturday by finishing eighth overall with 105 points at George Mason University.

Like most teams, William Monroe can’t go toe-to-toe with anyone by playing a one-on-one game. It’s clear at this point, after back-to-back wins over Western Albemarle and Orange County at home, the Dragons are starting to learn that lesson.

The Albemarle boys 4x800-meter relay team added another victory to its triumphant season on Friday night at the 102nd Millrose Games.

With a Commonwealth District regular-season title out of reach, Albemarle looked to play spoiler against Mountain View on Friday night. 

Asher recently decommitted from the University of Richmond — the FCS national champion coached by former Virginia assistant Mike London — and decided to accept an invited walk-on spot as a tight end at North Carolina.

Stafford High School picked an opportune time to play its most intense basketball of the night against Albemarle.

Blue Ridge also got a boost from junior center Martins Abele, who added 17 points and 11 boards. The 7-foot-1, 295-pound Latvian is undoubtedly a welcome presence inside.

The Patriots’ swim teams pulled off a sweep at the City/County Challenge, with the boys team running away with a victory while the girls squad held off a strong challenge from Western Albemarle to come away with the title.

However, Cronk’s victory wasn’t enough to take down the Patriots in the team standings. Western had a strong start to the night, but Albemarle crept back out in front to win by 27 points at UVa’s Aquatic and Fitness Center.
