The Cavaliers fell 15-13 in overtime to the Blue Devils.

The Cavaliers women’s lacrosse team made short work of Virginia Tech on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament, jumping out to a six-goal halftime lead en route to a 13-5 victory.

The Cavaliers couldn’t seem to come up with a stop or a draw control in the second half, and that undercut any attempt at a rally the offense could muster as the No.2 Cavaliers fell to No. 3 Maryland Friday night, 17-11.

Led by Ashley McCulloch’s four goals and four assists, Virginia put together an offensive barrage and the No.4 Cavaliers got off to exactly the kind of start they hoped for with a 19-3 runaway victory over Virginia Tech on Wednesday — the earliest season opener in the program’s history.

It’s not often that an ACC championship-caliber program feels the need to ramp up offseason expectations for its players. Apparently, complacency isn’t an issue in Virginia’s women’s lacrosse program.

Virginia’s women’s lacrosse team knew it would be in the NCAA tournament. The Cavaliers just didn’t know they’d be facing off against familiar ACC foe North Carolina. 

The No. 5 Cavs dismantled a second-straight Top 20 opponent Wednesday night in a 16-3 win over No. 12 George Mason in UVa’s regular season finale. The Cavaliers played 42 minutes of shutout lacrosse from the opening draw until almost midway through the second half, when the Patriots finally broke through with just 18 minutes to play.

As a sophomore, Ashley McCulloch finished third among Virginia players in points and set a season record for assists by a Cavalier. But with Jess Wasilewski running the show, it was apparent that the Cavalier offense wasn’t yet McCulloch’s to lead.

Virginia torched Johns Hopkins early and buried six of its first eight shots en route to a 17-6 victory over the Blue Jays.
