Two-time defending district champion Monticello will begin its bid for an impressive third consecutive league title at Orange (1-2) tonight.

For the past two seasons, Glover has played behind standouts Sam Roller and Chris Coiner, who led the Monticello defense to back-to-back Jefferson District and Division 3, Region II championships, including a Group AA title run in 2007.

For the second straight year Brud Bicknell took home the Harry Martin Memorial Trophy awarded to the top coach in the area as he led the Mustangs to Group AA Division 3 state semifinals. Last year, Bicknell split the award with St. Anne’s coach John Blake. Covenant running back Luke Heinsohn took home the Falcon Club MVP for his performance this past fall.

Monticello used its well-balanced offensive attack to dispatch John Handley for the Region II championship and advance to the Group AA, Division 3 semifinals this Saturday against James Monroe.

The Mustangs put together a perfect combination of passing, running and stingy defense to knock off John Handley 27-14 and capture their second consecutive Region II championship.

On Friday night, Michael Graham and Monticello let it be known that last week’s victory over Group AAA Albemarle was no fluke. The Mustangs handed King George a 33-13 loss for their 10th consecutive victory dating back to last season.

Despite its loss to Fork Union this past Friday, St. Anne’s-Belfield enjoyed success on offense all night.

It was anything but easy, but somehow Monticello overcame devastating penalties, a frustrating first half and the Central Virginia rains to nab a 19-12 victory over Albemarle.
