Three senior members of the Charlottesville School Board on Thursday announced their decisions to run for re-election, making it the first official announcement concerning the board’s three open seats this year.

The Charlottesville School Board unanimously approved a $68.3 million fiscal 2010 budget, and in doing so solidified class-size increases, position cuts and salary raises.

Charlottesville School Board members on Thursday saw that progress is being made in overall student achievement, but said there’s plenty of work to be done.

The Charlottesville School Board selected the Virginia Department of Planning and Budget to conduct a study measuring the city school division’s use of resources.

The Charlottesville School Board set aside Thursday up to $50,000 to review how the school system uses its resources during the 2008-09 school year.

A potential obstacle to the Meadowcreek Parkway was removed Thursday when the Charlottesville School Board voted 4-1 to donate approximately 8.5 acres at Charlottesville High School to the Virginia Department of Transportation for the long-planned project.

The Charlottesville School Board likely will approve a land deal to make way for the Meadowcreek Parkway, but will probably attach several conditions because of safety concerns, the board’s chairman said Friday.
