Charlottesville’s Henry Von Storch played the role of hero, netting a breathtaking goal from 23 yards out to topple top-seeded Fluvanna County 2-1 in overtime and send the Black Knights to the Jefferson District final.

Chapin Speidel and Michael Morris scored four goals each as the St. Anne’s-Belfield boys lacrosse team defeated Collegiate 18-11 to advance to the VIS Division 1 final.

However the Western Albemarle girls lacrosse teamed looked particularly poised on Thursday evening, defeating Charlottesville 15-8 to win the Jefferson District championship.

Close games are Fluvanna’s friend these days as the Flucos picked up another tight one against Charlottesville, winning 1-0.

Charlottesville broke open a tie game late with a goal from Ellie Von Storch off a perfectly placed pass from Maria Szakos to secure the 3-2 win and hand the Flying Flucos their first loss this spring.

While just about everyone in Central Virginia is grateful for all the rain so far this spring, there is a handful of people — namely, area high school athletic directors — who wouldn’t mind seeing the precipitation disappear, if only for just a little bit.

The Raiders, who devised a defensive scheme to shut down Charlottesville stars Shawntae Payne and Tanyqua Williams, executed their game plan perfectly and let the offense do the rest in the 77-45 victory.

The Black Knights had a three-point lead on Courtland in the Group AA, Division 4 semifinals, but watched the game slip away when Luke Sellers tied the game on a 3-pointer and Lamar Giggets hit a free throw with 2.8 seconds remaining to lead Cougars to a 61-60 victory.

The Miller School’s VIS Division 2 championship on Saturday was especially sweet for the Mavericks, as they avenged an earlier loss to top-seeded Atlantic Shores Christian en route to their first state title.

For the past two weeks, Shawntae Payne has playing every game as if it were her last.

But in the fourth quarter, Leatherwood couldn’t miss. He scored 13 of his team’s 16 points in the fourth frame to lead CHS to a 58-45 victory.

That attack mentality started with Minor on the fast break, and the senior put together a monster game as the Black Knights rolled past Jefferson District tournament champion Orange County 72-42 in the Region II, Division 4 final. Minor flirted with triple-double territory, finishing with 23 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

But a 13-point fourth quarter run keyed by nine points from Alissa Kain erased those three frames of dead-even basketball and lifted Loudoun to a 73-61 victory and the Region II, Division 4 title.

Lafayette swimming and diving coach Harold Baker’s teams have been no stranger to the podium at the state championship over the past few years, and Saturday’s swimming portion of the weekend event proved to be no different.

With the win, the Black Knights have secured a berth in the Group AA, Division 4 quarterfinals, whether or not they win Saturday night’s tilt with Loudoun County in the region final.
