The Raiders, who devised a defensive scheme to shut down Charlottesville stars Shawntae Payne and Tanyqua Williams, executed their game plan perfectly and let the offense do the rest in the 77-45 victory.

Knights fall in semis

The Black Knights had a three-point lead on Courtland in the Group AA, Division 4 semifinals, but watched the game slip away when Luke Sellers tied the game on a 3-pointer and Lamar Giggets hit a free throw with 2.8 seconds remaining to lead Cougars to a 61-60 victory.

Defense keys CHS victory

That attack mentality started with Minor on the fast break, and the senior put together a monster game as the Black Knights rolled past Jefferson District tournament champion Orange County 72-42 in the Region II, Division 4 final. Minor flirted with triple-double territory, finishing with 23 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

But a 13-point fourth quarter run keyed by nine points from Alissa Kain erased those three frames of dead-even basketball and lifted Loudoun to a 73-61 victory and the Region II, Division 4 title.

Lafayette swimming and diving coach Harold Baker’s teams have been no stranger to the podium at the state championship over the past few years, and Saturday’s swimming portion of the weekend event proved to be no different.
