Following a drubbing of Steward in the LIS semifinals, the Covenant girls soccer team again jumped out to an early lead, leading to a 10-0 dismantling of Fredericksburg Academy in Thursday’s championship game.

Playing host in the LIS semifinals against Steward, the Eagles made quick work of the Spartans, scoring early and often in a 9-0 victory.

Covenant dominated Blue Ridge Tuesday in the Virginia Independent Conference tournament semifinals, winning 17-4 on a rain-soaked field to move on to the title game.

On Tuesday, the Warriors adopted that philosophy with an impressive offensive output and strong defensive showing in a 14-5 victory over visiting Covenant.

“He just showed his heart and determination out there today,” said Covenant coach Dave Breslin.

Lee Coppock, Josey Flynn and Brian Pollard combined to hold Miller, the two-time defending VIC champions, to just a trio of runs in a 14-3 Covenant road victory.

After surrending a pair of runs on two hits and two wild pitches, Linthicum found a groove and retired 16 of the last 18 batters she faced as the Saints cruised past Covenant, 13-2.

Disappointed by a 10-7 loss over the weekend to Bishop Ireton, the Woodberry lacrosse team came into Tuesday’s match against Covenant with something to prove.

It wasn’t until the final minute of the first quarter that Andy Colberg was able to put Covenant on the board, but once he did, the Eagles poured it on to pick up the 12-3 victory.

In Virginia Beach, after trailing by 10 points entering the fourth quarter, Covenant completed a furious rally to knock off Cape Henry Collegiate 58-55 in the first round of the VIS Division II tournament Tuesday night.

David Falk’s 15 points led Madison to a 56-48 victory over Dan River for the title.

After staring at a goose egg in the win column for the better part of a month back in December, the No. 2 Eagles (14-8) now find themselves playing for a VIC Division II tournament championship after knocking off No. 3 North Cross 66-65 on Thursday night.

In the first quarter of the LIS championship against Steward, Smethurst became just the third player in school history to reach 1,000 points, and she helped to guide the Eagles to their third straight title with a 50-31 win.

Behind its outside shooting and constantly-shifting defense, the Covenant girls basketball team cruised past St. Margaret’s 41-18, earning a spot in the LIS championship.

Stutzman will head to Palo Alto, Calif. next fall to race for the Cardinals, whose cross country team is now coached by former Virginia coach Jason Dunn.
