Michael Shabaz, teaming with Dom Inglot, lost in doubles to North Carolina, but came back with vengeance in his singles, pacing Virginia to a 4-0 NCAA tournament victory that advanced the Cavaliers (31-0) to a round of 16 tilt against Florida State that kicks off on Thursday in College Station, Texas.

No. 1 Virginia (22-0, 7-0 ACC) knocked off the Hurricanes and Seminoles by identical 4-3 scores to stay undefeated.

“We knew that [Tyler] Hansbrough would really be the go-to guy down the stretch,” said FSU coach Leonard Hamilton. “We told our guys that if they had a chance to dig it out, to go ahead and do so.“

Virginia, down as many as 11 points in the first half, mounted a late charge to upend No. 11 Florida State 68-63 at the Tucker Center.

FSU, behind 19 points from star Toney Douglas, 17 points from Uche Echefu and 13 points from Solomon Alabi, used a 12-2 run in the second half to hand Virginia its eighth straight defeat, a 68-57 setback in front of a crowd of 7,921 at the Tucker Center.

During the Dave Leitao era, the Cavaliers have a 1-8 record in games played in Florida, California and Puerto Rico.

Given that the offense provided more than enough scoring Friday night, the often porous defense and ill-timed fouling left a bad taste in Ryan’s mouth after the 16th-ranked Cavaliers failed to hold serve at home against No. 22 Florida State, losing 80-75.

Halftime in the Virginia locker room was no place for the faint of heart.
