Scott Willard has been chosen as the Miller School’s athletic director and boys basketball coach.

As spring neared last basketball season, Mychal Parker had all but made up his mind about where he wanted to play in college.

After a decade, Wawner is saying goodbye to the Miller School program and will soon say hello to the staff at Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

The Miller School’s VIS Division 2 championship on Saturday was especially sweet for the Mavericks, as they avenged an earlier loss to top-seeded Atlantic Shores Christian en route to their first state title.

The Mavericks worked the ball inside early and often and used a stingy defense to upend the Seahawks, 69-61, and capture their first title.

“Only two things happen if you go on the corner,” Marshawn Powell said. “You die within two, three months, or you go to jail. I don’t want to do either one of those.”

In a highly-anticipated matchup between two of central Virginia’s top teams, Round 1 went to Blue Ridge.

And, to that end, Virginia coach Dave Leitao has zeroed in on Mychal Parker — a silky-smooth wing player who just so happens to be playing at the nearby Miller School this year.

Kids playing stickball, fishing and making up games to play until it’s too dark to see sounds a lot like the 1950s. At Camp Wahoo, that’s exactly the point.
