For his leadership and outstanding play this past season at Miller, Powell was named All-Central Virginia boys basketball player of the year by The Daily Progress sports staff.

After a decade, Wawner is saying goodbye to the Miller School program and will soon say hello to the staff at Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

The Miller School’s VIS Division 2 championship on Saturday was especially sweet for the Mavericks, as they avenged an earlier loss to top-seeded Atlantic Shores Christian en route to their first state title.

It wasn’t a pristine effort, but Miller managed to overcome some general sluggishness and punch its ticket to Petersburg and the VIS Division II semifinals with an 82-68 victory over Walsingham Academy.

“Only two things happen if you go on the corner,” Marshawn Powell said. “You die within two, three months, or you go to jail. I don’t want to do either one of those.”

When it came time to make a decision on where to attend college, Elizabeth Brightwell knew she didn’t want to go far from home.
