Multimedia: Racing the Recession
The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at Montpelier is struggling to care for its herd of race horses in the face of the recession. The foundation relies on donors to sponsor or adopt the horses, but as the economy continues its slide, more horses are in need of care and fewer people are able to help.

Officials at James Madison’s Montpelier say the estate in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is attracting more visitors.
Since January, more than 6,500 tourists have visited Montpelier. And year-to-date figures show that visitation to the Madison home is more than 50 percent higher than in 2007.
