If the regular season is any indication, then area basketball fans could be in for a treat as the boys and girls Jefferson District tournaments get underway today.

The Hornets got big steals from Tyler Seal and Quintin Hunter in the closing seconds and made 3 of 4 free throws in the final three seconds to prevail 69-65 and earn their biggest win of the season thus far.

The Western Albemarle girls and boys swimming teams swept the competition at the Jefferson District championships on Saturday.

Tanyqua Williams has been waiting to play basketball for quite some time. Finally eligible to play, Williams made an official introduction to the Jefferson District in Charlottesville’s 59-42 win over Orange County on Tuesday night.

With an 81-71 victory over Orange County on Tuesday night, the Charlottesville boys basketball team inched one step closer to a chance for the Jefferson District title and a Region II berth.

Like most teams, William Monroe can’t go toe-to-toe with anyone by playing a one-on-one game. It’s clear at this point, after back-to-back wins over Western Albemarle and Orange County at home, the Dragons are starting to learn that lesson.

Orange County used long-range offense and pressure defense to pull away with a big 63-40 Jefferson District girls basketball victory at Western Albemarle on Friday night.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that any team that wants to beat Western Albemarle is going to have to do it with defense.

With Charlottesville, Orange County and Western Albemarle all sitting at 2-0, the race for the Jefferson District boys title may already be shaking out a bit.

The Miller School’s girls basketball team has displayed its strength early this season, knocking off Charlottesville and Patrick Henry-Roanoke before falling to a very good Spotswood team in the championship of The Daily Progress NBC29 Holiday Classic on Tuesday.

Patrick Henry showed no signs of fatigue after a late night on Monday as it put on a stellar offensive display and let its defense do the rest in a win over Orange County in the third-place game of The Daily Progress NBC29 Holiday Classic on Tuesday afternoon.

But the win didn’t come without a test from a pesky Hornets squad, which gave the Blazers all they could handle for three quarters before Spotswood pulled away to prevail 73-62.

There was time left — 3.3 seconds, to be exact — and Green’s shot gave the Hornets the 52-51 victory as Albemarle’s Tamika Lewis missed on a 15-foot jumper as time expired.
