Virginia’s new spread offense could get more receivers on the field.

One of the key elements that help a spread offense become effective is a corps of wide receivers that can make something happen after the catch, or as Gregg Brandon said last December, “turn six yards into 60.”

It turns out Quintin Hunter had one more trick in his bag for the Jefferson District.

Orange executed those three aspects of its game to near-perfection on Tuesday night, as it knocked off top-seeded Charlottesville 71-63 in the semifinals of the Jefferson District tournament at Western Albemarle.

The Hornets got big steals from Tyler Seal and Quintin Hunter in the closing seconds and made 3 of 4 free throws in the final three seconds to prevail 69-65 and earn their biggest win of the season thus far.

The tides turned and Virginia reaped the ultimate reward Thursday when the four-star offensive lineman verbally committed to play for coach Al Groh.

Three Jefferson District products made the first team — wide receiver Jake Pelton and offensive guard Wheeler Young of Monticello and Orange County defensive back Quintin Hunter, who has committed to UVa.

“We’ve started preaching rebounding here because we’ve been outrebounded our last couple of games,” said Orange head coach Keyode Rogers. “We have to rebound better in all of our games.”

It is different with every situation, but Sherando quarterback Ross Metheny is firmly committed to play football at Virginia.

With 8 minutes and 28 seconds left in the Hornets’ 48-26 victory over Fluvanna County, Orange called a timeout and subbed out a number of seniors, including Hunter, effectively ending the UVa commitment’s time as a high school quarterback. The Hornets, at 7-3 overall, were left on the outside looking in of the VHSL’s Power Poll system.

St. Anne’s victory over Blue Ridge and Covenant’s thrashing of Hargrave Military Academy set up a rematch between the Saints and Eagles in the VISAA Division II state semifinals, scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.

With his team down two touchdowns midway through the fourth quarter, Hunter and the Hornets stormed from behind to take a thrilling 36-35 decision over Western Albemarle in the season finale for the Warriors.

Orange County’s postseason fate is unknown, but one thing is for sure — the Hornets came a step closer to reaching their goal Friday night.
