Potomac Falls stops Orange in Region II final

Potomac Falls catcher Mike Spring came through for Potomac Falls with a two-out, two-RBI hit in the seventh inning, breaking a tie and lifting the Panthers to a 5-1 victory over Orange County in the Region II baseball championship on Friday night.

Potomac Falls starting hurler Jacob Kline lived up to his daunting season line, throwing the full seven innings while allowing just one run and fanning seven in leading the Panthers to a 5-1 victory.

The Spartans were the ones able to redeem themselves Wednesday night, handling Fluvanna 3-0 to earn a date with Potomac Falls or Brentsville District on Friday.

Defense keys CHS victory

That attack mentality started with Minor on the fast break, and the senior put together a monster game as the Black Knights rolled past Jefferson District tournament champion Orange County 72-42 in the Region II, Division 4 final. Minor flirted with triple-double territory, finishing with 23 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

But a 13-point fourth quarter run keyed by nine points from Alissa Kain erased those three frames of dead-even basketball and lifted Loudoun to a 73-61 victory and the Region II, Division 4 title.

Black Knights cruise

With the win, the Black Knights have secured a berth in the Group AA, Division 4 quarterfinals, whether or not they win Saturday night’s tilt with Loudoun County in the region final.

CHS wins in semis

But Bushrod’s effort couldn’t lift the Raiders, because Charlottesville held the rest of Loudoun’s squad in check and pushed the ball hard in transition all night behind Maurice Jackson and Minor. With a 79-68 victory, the Black Knights locked up a state quarterfinal berth.

Desch keys Warriors’ win

Mere seconds after mishandling a pass on a set play off a short corner, the junior drove into the teeth of the Orange defense, spun and connected on a reverse flick to put Western up just seconds before the end of the first half. The Warriors, who are the defending state champions, went on to win 2-0 over the Hornets, picking up the Region II title and a bye in next week’s Group A/AA state tournament.
