As a result of his hard work and tutelage this past season, which turned out to be his final as Madison’s coach, Taylor was chosen as the The Daily Progress’ All-Central Virginia boys basketball coach of the year for the second time in four years.

In the end, Taylor chose to rejoin Ryan’s staff at U.Va. and become the Cavaliers’ associate head coach.

The Miller School’s VIS Division 2 championship on Saturday was especially sweet for the Mavericks, as they avenged an earlier loss to top-seeded Atlantic Shores Christian en route to their first state title.

The Mountaineer faithful made their presence felt at Monticello High, and their team didn’t disappoint as Madison held off a fourth-quarter rally from Northampton to win, 66-57.

The Mountaineers’ trio of varsity assistant coaches played on three different state championship or state runner-up squads at different times during Madison’s storied basketball history.

“That’s something we’ve been working on in practice since the Orange game (Jefferson District semifinals),” Omari Minor said after the win over Loudoun County.

Logan Terrell is also a key reason Madison is a perfect 21-0 after an unbeaten regular season. The Mountaineers will try to keep that streak going Wednesday night in the Bull Run District semifinals against Manassas Park.

“My dad was on that [1977] team,” David Falk said. “They went 21-0, and it’s real nice for us to be able to do the same thing that they did. But it’s 0-0 now. We’re going to have to play one game at time.”

Hosting George Mason, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 16-0 start, and dominated on both sides of the court, winning 61-34.

On Friday, the Mountaineers dispatched Manassas Park 58-38, but committed 19 turnovers in the process — something Taylor will not accept.

This week’s wintry weather forced a host of area high school athletic events to be postponed. Most basketball games are scheduled to be made up later this week or next week.

With Madison County entering Saturday night’s game with an undefeated record and a No. 1 ranking in Group A courtesy of the Associated Press, Monticello looked to knock the Mountaineers off their lofty perch. Like Madison’s previous 14 opponents, the Mustangs left with a loss, 66-52.

The Mountaineers are 4-0 against Jefferson District opponents this year after twice beating William Monroe and completing the season sweep of Orange County with a 76-63 home win Friday night.
