Western teams win JD

Western Albemarle has built quite a legacy in the sport of tennis in its years in the Jefferson District, as both the boys and girls teams have won every title since the league was formed. The Warriors continued that streak in the 2008 championship on Tuesday at Piedmont Virginia Community College, as each team defeated rival Monticello.

The Western Albemarle boys lacrosse team is back in familiar territory. On Tuesday night, the Warriors dispatched Monticello 12-6, earning a spot in Jefferson District championship.

St. Anne’s-Belfield seems to have stumbled on to a simple formula that works pretty well. The Saints disposed of Western Albemarle in much the same fashion that St. Anne’s did Woodberry Forest on Saturday - jump out to a big lead, stay patient on offense and let a solid defense take over.

At first glance, Nancy Haws’ halftime speech didn’t seem to have much of an effect on her Western Albemarle girls lacrosse charges. But with a little help from the Warriors’ senior goalkeeper, her words had the desired effect.
