Eighteen-year-old Nick Austin fired a 6-under 66 in grand fashion to lead the way after the first round of the 2009 Jefferson Cup tournament at Birdwood Golf Club.

It’s a two-horse race for the 19th annual Battle Trophy, symbolic of the Central Virginia Amateur Golfer of the Year, heading into the competition’s final event of the season, next month’s Jefferson Cup at Birdwood.

Mikey Moyers of Stanardsville and Jerry Burton of Charlottesville were each eliminated in Thursday’s second round of match play at Cedar Point Country Club.

Eighteen-year-old Mikey Moyers delivered his second consecutive round of 66 in the VSGA’s 96th State Amateur Championship at Cedar Point Country Club.
In doing so Wednesday, the Stanardsville resident set the championship’s 36-hole stroke play qualifying scoring record of 12-under 132.

Playing on a difficult rain-soaked course, Eklund easily outpaced the field at the third annual Old Trail Team Invitational.

Hondula, who shot a 72 in opening-round play on Friday, sits one stroke back of leader Weston Eklund at 145 heading into today’s final round.

Radford-bound Weston Eklund was the only member of the field to shoot under par in the opening round, and his 2-under round of 70 gave him a two-stroke lead.

The city championship has been the most unpredictable of all the local major tournaments over the past two decades.
