Will Roberts fanned eight batters in his first career start on the mound for the Cavaliers, earning his first collegiate victory in the process as Virginia routed William & Mary 11-1 at Davenport Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The rookie right-hander allowed just three hits and a walk as he notched his first win.

“For our team, the performance of Will Roberts was truly a bright a spot,” Virginia coach Brian O’Connor said. “He had pinpoint control and command today. He can be a complete pitcher.”

Roberts was given ample run support in the second inning as Virginia plated four runs. Timely hitting provided five more runs in third, giving Roberts a comfort zone to work with.

“Going out there in the first inning and second inning in a tie ballgame is totally different than going out there with a nine-run lead,” Roberts said. “It mainly just took the pressure of me, and just allowed me to throw strikes and challenge the hitters.”

UVa (5-0) collected 13 hits, including three doubles, and stole three bases. Phil Gosselin and Jarrett Parker drove in three runs apiece.
