Virginia coach Dave Leitao reacts to a call during the Cavaliers’ 73-62 loss to Florida State on Saturday afternoon.

Three ghastly efforts in Puerto Rico during the 2006-07 season. A wretched loss at home to Bradley in the CBI last season. A putrid performance against Liberty this season.

Well, they can all take a back seat now — there is a new low point in Virginia basketball during the Dave Leitao era.

It occurred on Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena in a performance that would likely have Dr. James Naismith wondering why he bothered to hang those peach baskets.

Virginia put forth a stinker for the ages. Playing a team as young as them, the Cavaliers couldn’t do a thing right in dropping their fourth straight game to visiting Florida State, 73-62, in front of a frustrated crowd of 10,981.

“They systematically and methodically wore us down,” Leitao said. “They wore us down mentally and physically.”

Florida State (16-4, 3-2 ACC) was led by Toney Douglas, who had 21 points and five assists. Sylven Landesberg had a game-high 24 points to lead Virginia, but most of them came after the game had already been decided in the first 20 minutes.

Think Virginia’s first-half performance against Maryland on Tuesday night was bad? How about this — UVa scored just one basket in the first 18 minutes and 26 seconds of the game versus FSU. For the majority of the half, Virginia had more turnovers than points.

The only thing that kept Leitao’s crew from getting completely blown out of its $130 million arena was the Seminoles’ 13 first-half turnovers.

Virginia’s first-half stats were almost too atrocious to believe: 3 of 22 from the field, (including 0 of 8 from 3-point range), 12 turnovers and one assist.

Florida State, which came into the game as the second-ranked defensive team in the ACC, was in the face of the Virginia players from the opening whistle. The tenacity that Seminoles players exhibited was reminiscent of those Hoya Paranoia teams of Georgetown in the 1980s.

The phrase “deer in the headlights” would be too kind of an assessment for how Virginia players looked on the court.

“They really, really guard you,” said Leitao, whose team is off until a visit to Duke next Sunday. “The few open looks that you get, you have to make…we obviously didn’t do that and paid a heavy price for it.”

Remarkably, Virginia only trailed 30-16 at the half after a Landesberg coast-to-coast driving layup at the buzzer. Landesberg said Leitao tried to fire everyone up during the intermission.

“He came in there and told us that this was a gut-check and we were going to man up now or never,” Landesberg said. “They were blowing us out and embarrassing us at home. We either had to turn the game around or it was going to get worse.”

Briefly, things got better. Virginia (7-9, 1-4) hit more shots in the first five minutes of the second half than it had all game.

When Jamil Tucker stole the ball from Douglas and raced in for a one-handed jam to cut the lead to 44-31, there was a glimmer of hope. But as soon as fans started to make some noise, Douglas swished a 3-pointer at the other end as he was being fouled by Sammy Zeglinski, setting up a four-point play.

“That was a point in time where the crowd got back in the game and the door was slightly opened back up — and then closed real quick,” Leitao said. “Anytime you put yourself in a hole like that, you’ve got to play damn near perfect basketball.”

For the umpteenth time this season, Virginia — which is starting three freshmen — was far from that.

“We’re all disappointed with the way we played,” said sophomore Mike Scott. “There’s just a lot of disappointment going around.

“Today we just couldn’t get into any kind of rhythm…it wasn’t a physical thing, because we definitely match up with them.”

Leitao believes FSU is a lot better than people think.

“I look at them as a very good team and not getting quite the amount of attention or respect as everyone else on top of the league — the [North] Carolinas and Dukes and Clemsons of the world and Wake Forest,” said Leitao, who will see FSU again on Feb. 10. “There really isn’t that much difference, … We were playing a very good team.”

“They were excellent on defense,” added Scott. “They were just playing harder than we were.”

Dunks

At halftime, Jason Bauman, Virginia’s associate director of athletics for facilities and operations, received the ACC Men’s Basketball Officials’ Association’s Skip Prosser Distinguished Service Award. The association presents the award annually to someone who has helped the cause of officiating in the ACC.

first of all, let me say Al Groh is FAR from being an amazing coach.  In my opinion he should not be a head coach.  He was a decent NFL assistant.  The only good year he had was with welsh’s players(schabb, miller, hagans etc.).  In fact he was voted one of the worse coaches in college.  So to say he is amazing is just wishful thinking.  Regarding Leitao, it is in NO way his fault what is happening or what happened Saturday.  He cant make shots, play D, or stop his players from fouling 3 point shots in key situations, nor can he help that his teams offense consist of passing the ball around the ark until 2 seconds on the shot clock and hurls up a hopeless 3.  It is in NO way his fault.  Coach of the year and CO Champion.  Calhoons product. Excellent coach, unlike Groh!! GROH MUST GO!

You are right with Petes players. But we didnt have a talented team! Sean, JR, and a bunch of boys that weren’t that good…Top 25 talent? With no inside presence? No pure outside shooters? No great defenders? No way no how…The football team has been talented and Groh simply underachieves. He has no more excuses. He surronds himself with talented coaches and he simply is not a head coach. I would love Groh as a D cord but not a head coach. It’s put up or shut up time for him too. But You have to give Dave 2 more years until these freshman are Juniors to see what his worth is. You right, he coached with Gillians players and now we have to give him time to see what his players can do as upper classmen.

Coach of the year sure, with Petes players and a pure all star cast to carry him.  Even last season it was the same deal with an all star having to carry Dave.

This year that just has not happened.  We have a talented team but no all stars.  The team is not the issue it is the coach.  I would even argue that we have talent just as good as most of the top 25 teams right now.

Groh on the other hand is an amazing coach and we are lucky to have him.  He has made a few bad decisions but the future is bright for our football program.

Everyone is bashing Leito and he did coach a bad game, but let’s not forget that a couple of years ago Leito was ACC Coach of the year as well as Co regular season champions.  That team was more talented than the team we have now but far less talented then the upper teams in our conference or probably over 50% of the teams at that time. Saying that, it shows that Leito can coach. He did not shoot 14% in the first half, he wasn’t the one hesitant to drive or shoot(including Sylvan in the first half), he wasn’t the one fouling 3 point shooters(check Sammy Z), he wasn’t the one not boxing out. Again, he did make mistakes: his rotation wasn’t good, why he left Sammy Z out there no one knows, he coulda used TO’s earlier. There was a lot he could do. But again, right now we dont have the talent to be a good ACC team now. In 2 years I’m confident we can be in the big dance if the players progress like they should. But right now the cupboard has nothing in it. If we dont see a big improvement(winning season) next year, I’ll be the first in the line saying Dave must Go…Right behind Al Groh!

Took my 12 year old son and his best friend to his “first” UVA game.  What a snoozer?  They could not believe how bad we were.  It was embarassing to say the least.  Leitao’s comment that they wore us down is ridiculous.  We simply didn’t play ball.  Too much hesitation with most of our players when they had an open shot and no one willing to put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket and create something.  The ball handling was sloppy from start to finish.  And then Jones did come in second half and give us a Spark and then back to the bench.  What is that all about?  My son said why isn’t he playing more after he nailed a jumper and 2 three pointers?  Any answers Leitao?

Dave did not coach a very good game at all. But I have faith in him. I simply want to know why Sammy Z was allowed to remain in the game and play as bad as he did.  You have to replace a player that continues to foul, misses all his shots and has turnover after turnover.

I was at those CBI games last year.  I watched Dave sit on the bench as our team got pounded just casually watching the game.  Fans in the stands were doing more coaching than him.

Where is the fire?  Where is the passion?  Perhaps it is gone now that he knows he is in way over his head.  Dave would be a good assistant coach or a head coach at some small school in a weak conference.  The ACC is the best of the best and Dave is just flat out out classed.

Congratulations Mr. Littlepage.  You’ve managed to totally destroy, what was once, a proud sports program in football and basketball.  Programs that were, at LEAST, competetive.
