In Los Angeles, Virginia sophomore guard Sylven Landesberg was one of 50 players named as preseason candidates for the men’s John R. Wooden Award, while senior guard Monica Wright was on the women’s list.

Last season, Landesberg led the Cavaliers in scoring with 16.6 ppg as a freshman. He also averaged 6.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists a game. He was the ACC rookie of the year.

Wright led the ACC in scoring at 20.5 ppg and was a first-team all-conference pick.

Transfers, freshmen and medical redshirts are not eligible for the preseason list. These players and others who excel throughout the season will be considered for December’s midseason list and the official voting ballot released in March.

Landesberg is one of 10 ACC players on the men’s list. He is joined by Florida State center Solomon Alabi, Wake Forest forward Al-Farouq Aminu, Clemson forward Trevor Booker, North Carolina forwards Ed Davis and Deon Thompson, Georgia Tech forward Gani Lawal, Duke guard Jon Scheyer and forward Kyle Singler and Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez.

ACC players on the women’s list are UNC’s Jessica Breland — who may take a medical redshirt this season — Florida State’s Jacinta Monroe and Carolyn Swords of Boston College.
