Prickly public persona doomed Leitao

Prickly public persona doomed Leitao

Dave Leitao was known for his animated, combative on-court personality during his four-year tenure as Virginia’s coach.

Several images come to mind when most people think of former Virginia coach Dave Leitao.

There are the ones of Leitao berating his players in front of 14,000 fans. There are the ones of Leitao being curt with the media. There are the ones of Leitao cursing at officials and sometimes even his own athletic trainers.

In most of the mental snapshots, the 6-foot-7 Leitao comes across as angry and menacing.

Very few people have images of a jovial Leitao — even during the team’s run to a share of the ACC regular-season championship in 2007.

In the end, the negative perception might have been one of the final factors that led to his downfall.

The unfortunate part for Leitao is that the people closest to him — even the players who have left the program on seemingly bad terms — say that behind closed doors, Leitao, for the most part, is a really good guy.

But Leitao only allowed a select few into his inner circle. If you weren’t in that small contingent, you were basically left on the outside looking in.

And when that happened, it was only natural for outsiders to believe that Leitao’s personality off the court was the same as it was on the court and in front of television cameras.

“Not everybody saw coach Leitao off the court,” said Virginia sophomore Mike Scott. “Most people [saw] him yelling or whatever during games.

“But if you went upstairs and talked to him, he’s calm, cool, laughing and joking. We used to joke around all the time. Most people don’t see that. In the games, he’s just amped up and competing and wanting to win.”

Scott and Leitao had numerous verbal spats during games — so many that some insiders surmised that Scott would have transferred if Leitao hadn’t departed. However, Scott dispelled that notion emphatically.

“It may have seemed a lot of times like we were having feuds on the court, but what coach and player don’t do that?” Scott said. “He just challenged me a lot and wanted me to compete.”

Initially, ACC rookie of the year Sylven Landesberg said he was a bit confused with some of Leitao’s tactics.

“I would wonder, ‘Why would he yell at me for this or get on me for that?’” Landesberg said. “It took me a while to understand that it was a point of motivation.”

Added freshman Sammy Zeglinski: “His competitiveness was unmatched. He just really taught me how to compete.”

Former Virginia player Will Harris, who is now at Albany, said he had problems with Leitao’s player rotations and substitution patterns but never any issues with his personality.

“I felt for him,” said Harris, when asked how he had reacted to Leitao’s departure. “I like him as a person. He just got a rough deal.”

The flip side to the sentiments from Leitao’s inner circle were those from the outer one.

Former Virginia radio color commentator Jim Hobgood was often disrespected by Leitao during postgame interviews. In an infamous session in Puerto Rico three seasons ago, Leitao virtually ignored Hobgood, a former UVa player.

“Maybe I’ve reached the age where I take the attitude of, ‘I don’t necessarily need to deal with that any longer,’” said Hobgood a few months back, when asked about his relationship with Leitao.

Hobgood wasn’t alone in his frustrations. A number of former players never made Leitao’s inner circle.

One recent Virginia graduate, a starter for Leitao, e-mailed The Daily Progress shortly after the coach’s departure. “Justice served, ha ha,” the player wrote.

Several former Wahoos who never played for Leitao often complained of his failure to reach out to them and fellow alums.

Donors to the program complained of Leitao’s unfriendliness.

Media members were subjected to a restrictive policy instituted by Leitao assistant Rick Brunson that forbade journalists from stopping by unannounced.

Virginia athletic trainer Jeff Boyer, who used to work with the basketball team, was the victim of a Leitao in-game tirade that led to his being reassigned to the school’s soccer teams.

Over the course of the last four years, a good number of fans were upset with the language that Leitao used on the sidelines with young children present.

One opposing fan from Gonzaga who lives in Spokane, Wash., wrote in to say that in all her years of watching basketball, she had never heard a coach with a dirtier mouth than Leitao’s.

“I can’t repeat any of it,” said former Virginia player J.R. Reynolds, when asked about Leitao’s motivational techniques two years ago.

Virginia junior Jamil Tucker said Leitao’s criticism was always “constructive.”

“It’s nothing to make me feel bad as a person,” said Tucker during the 2007-08 season. “It’s just ways to make me better. As long as I keep that in my mind, it’s never been a problem.”

But to outsiders looking in, maybe it was.

Are you kidding me?  Have you ever heard Coach K, or read his lips during a sideline TV shot?  He’s well known to be one of the most foul-mouthed coaches in the country.  So things didn’t work out with Dave Leitao—move on, for God’s sake.

Finally!  There are others who are as fed up with this column as much as I am.  Whitey, you have made your point and now it is time to move on.  Your 5 part series is more like a childlike tantrum.  It really isn’t necessary.  If anything, it sheds light on your character.

What do you hope to gain through your writing.  How ‘bout shedding some light on new prospects?  Bring something positive for the Wahoos to look forward to.  Instead, you continue to write about the progam that you apparently know nothing about.  For example, I laugh at how you portray yourself as an insider, when in fact you couldn’t be further from the truth (of what truly goes on in that progam).  You seem disgruntled!  You really think we believe you when you say that a newcomer like Brunson could implement a no media policy if it wasn’t coming from the top brass (Yes, I mean above LEITAO)?

This town is really at a disadvantage when it is limited to such poor commentary.  You are worse than ESPN in the summer when there is no news worthy sporting events to report (BORING).  Please, please stop killing us with your rant on Leitao.  Move on.  We all are trying to.

And in closing, you might want to check out some of your colleagues articles in the NATIONAL papers.  Their writing is legit and newsworthy!

Ha ha. I hope we get either Tubby Smith or Anthony Grant. Then when we’re .500 in year two Whitey and all the ‘blue bloods’ can hate on him and conspire to get him fired because he curses on the sideline. Why doesn’t the athletic dept. just offer Holland a truckload of money to come back? That’ll solve everything…right?

Way to kick the guy when he’s down. The entire readership of the Daily Progress understands that you dislike Dave as a person and as a coach. Most of your posts smack of sour grapes, though (we’re all sorry you can’t hang out with your buddy, Lars, anymore). Just move on, Whitey. How about doing some actual reporting on the new coaching candidates? Novel concept…

The Daily Progress should be embarrassed to publish yet another column in this petty and transparent vendetta of Reid’s.  I have many images of Leitao other than those that come to Mr. Reid’s mind when he sits down to compose a column, but then again, I don’t have an agenda.

It probably was time for Dave and the U to move on, but there’s really no need for aggrieved local sports writers to stab the coach in the back on his way out the door.  Mr. Reid’s obvious vendetta is unprofessional and it makes him and his employer look worse than their target, who has taken his dismissal with dignity and moved on.

I’ll take some honest profanity over disingenuous sports “reporting” any day.

Bias really?  Come on, the writers here have gone out of their way in my opinion to give Dave the benifit of the doubt and even spun his hire to sound like a positive thing four years ago.

If they were really “after” Dave then these type of articles would have come out a long time ago.  The fact that we are only seeing them now shows that the articles were surpressed and they had indeed gone easy on Dave.  Now that he is gone, all the details are coming to light.

I am sure Dave has many good qualities but he is not a very good coach and his demeaning personality does not fit the UVA culture.

We need a pro, we need somebody with class, we need somebody that has a deep love and understanding of the game, we “NEED” Tubby Smith.

You are going out of your way to find any negative example you can of coach Leitao.  I know him personally and you would never find a more patient, caring person in the world. Go talk with the DePaul Athletic Director and all the staff there. Find someone with some credibility and status instead of disgruntled players who thought they were going pro.  When DePaul played UCONN in the NCAA tournament Donyell Marshall sat on the DePaul side with coach Leitao instead of with his school even though he was shown on TV. When Reggie Lewis passed away at Northeastern Leitao was one of seven people to speak at his eulogy. That is how close he became to players. He has helped dozens and dozens of players who have been in need of help, who have struggled academically, who were homesick, who had issues with their family, who needed mentoring after college, who want him to speak at their camps, benefits, donate his time. I am not saying he is a saint, BUT IF YOU REALLY REALLY KNEW HIM you would be truely ashamed of the picture you are trying to paint of him.

If this series of articles isn’t evidence of a personal vendetta against the coach, then I don’t know what is.  He’s gone, you got what you wanted. How about do some real reporting and find some facts on the coaching search.  The editor of this paper and Jerry should be ashamed of themselves.

Leito seemed to have quite a temper.  My impression was that with some frequency he behaved badly/inappropriately.  When I look at many of the other great coaches in the NCAA, Coach K or Roy Willimas, I sure don’t see them behaving this way…not even close.

I found Leito’s behavior embarrasing and think UVA made the correct decision.

Bobby Knight is a coach that might be a little rough but at his core is a wonderful person.  However his roughness was never “dirty” or belittling like Dave was to our players, staff, fans, and the press.  And least we not forget… Bobby Knight is an amazing coach while Dave should be off at some middle school teaching PE perhaps… but not with a mouth like his.

I do not buy into all the things the players are syaing publicly.  We all know the stories and we all know people that know the players.  It is a small world.  I think the one true quote is from the player that started but did not give his name when he said “HAHA Justice served.“  Privatly, most of them are glad he is gone and excited about who is coming next, the system they will put in place at UVA, and how they will be a part of it.

I am excited too.  However it is bittersweet as it is 4 years too late.
