Tristan Spurlock, “I am going to UVa next year.“
Top recruit Tristan Spurlock is honoring his commitment to Virginia. Late Tuesday night, the Word of Life (Springfield, Va.) star told The Daily Progress so in a text message.
“I am going to UVa next year,” wrote the versatile 6-foot-7 Spurlock, who had been recruited for some three years by former Virginia coach Dave Leitao.
Spurlock’s decision comes as a sigh of relief to Cavalier fans – not to mention new coach Tony Bennett.
After Leitao’s departure, Spurlock—rated as a 4-out-of-5 star recruit by Rivals.com and the 82nd-best prospect in the country – considered the possibility of asking to be released from his signed letter of intent.
“After they fired coach [Dave] Leitao, that kind of got me a little bit because that was never even a thought [of that happening],” Spurlock told the Daily Progress on March 30. “It caught me off guard big time.”
But an in-home visit by Bennett shortly after he was hired apparently helped convince Spurlock to honor his commitment to Virginia.
Spurlock is expected to form a nice tandem on the perimeter with ACC Rookie of the Year Sylven Landesberg next season.
