Perry Jones jumped at the chance to play football at Virginia.
Just three days after being offered a scholarship to play for the Cavaliers, the in-state linebacker verbally committed to coach Al Groh. Jones, who is from Oscar Smith High in Chesapeake, becomes the ninth commitment in the Class of 2009.
“It was real exciting getting it over with early, and now I can focus on the rest of my high school career,” Jones said. “I wanted to go somewhere that I had to work hard to earn a spot. If I have to earn it, that is going to make me play better.”
Perceived as a safety in college, Jones registered 141 tackles and collected five interceptions during his junior season.
Jones stands at 5-foot-9 and 178 pounds and was timed at 4.3 in the 40-yard dash.
