No. 17 Whitney Neuhauser, a Barboursville native and rising senior at Virginia, recorded a 1-up win over No. 48 Esther Lee of Los Alamitos, Calif.

Neuhauser, a rising senior at the University of Virginia and a graduate of Monticello High School, outlasted UVa teammate Lauren Greenlief in a 20-hole victory in the 84th VSGA Women’s Amateur Championship at Danville Golf Club.

Virginia finished eighth at the NCAA championships at Caves Valley Golf Club, recording the first top-10 showing in the program’s six-year existence.

Seeded ninth in the 14-team field, the Cavaliers finished fourth among 14 teams to earn one of five spots in the national tournament.

Around this time last year, Whitney Neuhauser made a giant leap forward in her golf game. She hopes this week’s ACC women’s championships provide a similar springboard.

Virginia accomplished that and will reap the reward today — the Cavaliers open play as one of 30 teams at the championships, which are being held at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. The Cavaliers enter as the event’s 30th seed.
