Cavaliers finish 8th at NCAAs

In Owings Mills, Md., Virginia finished eighth at the NCAA championships at Caves Valley Golf Club, recording the first top-10 showing in the program’s six-year existence.
The Cavaliers finished with a four-day total of 60-over 1212 after a 304 in Friday’s final round. Arizona State shot 291 to finish at 1182 and claim its seventh NCAA championship, followed by second-place UCLA (1190) and USC (1191).
UVa sophomore Calle Nielson tied for sixth place overall. She shot even-par 72 for a 72-hole total of 294. Nielson started the tournament with scores of 75 and 76
before playing the final two days at 1 under par.
UVa’s second-best finish came from Lene Krog, who was 48th overall at 305. Monticello graduate Whitney Neuhauser was 54th at 307. Kristen Simpson was 70th and Joy Kim was 75th.
Purdue’s Maria Hernandez took medalist honors at 1-over 289.
