In Williamsburg, the Western Albemarle golf team shot a 311 on the second day of the Group AA golf tournament and a 612 overall to finish in fifth place over two days.

For the sixth consecutive season, Western Albemarle was presented with the Jefferson District championship trophy after an impressive 20-stroke victory over runner-up Monticello, 317-337 on Monday at Lake of the Woods golf course.

Moyers’ two-day score of 15-under 127 shattered the Group AA record of 134 set in 1968 by Blacksburg’s Mark Long.

In the first of two rounds in the Group AA championship, Mikey Moyers gave himself significant wiggle room with his score of 6-under 65.

“When I bogeyed those two holes I didn’t think I was going to qualify for states,” Mikey Moyers said. “So I was a little worried.”

For the seventh year in a row, Western Albemarle walked away with the Jefferson District tournament title on Tuesday afternoon at Meadowcreek Golf Course. The Warriors’ top player, Patrick Leisure, fought off Monticello’s Kevin Archer in a playoff to win the individual crown.

In Gordonsville, Western Albemarle used a balanced effort to hold off Mikey Moyers and William Monroe in the Jefferson District Golf mini-match at Spring Creek Golf Club.

While the pressure may have nagged him, Moyers was able to overcome it, defeating Jack Wilkes 2-up at Birdwood Golf Course to become the first-ever repeat champion.

After two days of stroke play qualifying, the VSGA kicked off its Junior Match Play Championship on Thursday.
