The Chargers beat Albemarle 10-9 on Saturday in the state quarterfinals on the strength of junior attackman Brendan Waters’ game-winning shot two and 1/2 minutes into overtime.

The Chargers scored the game’s first nine goals in a 20-5 victory in the Group AA/AAA quarterfinals.

The Patriots more than made up for last week’s loss with an impressive 20-1 drubbing of the Bruins.

Albemarle saved its best lacrosse for its most important game this season, as the Patriots cruised past Loudoun Valley 8-3 in Tuesday’s Northwest Region Championship.

Albemarle kept its win streak and state title hopes rolling on Friday in the Northwest Region semifinals against Osbourn Park, as the Patriots once again held on in a closely matched game, 7-6.

The trend didn’t last long. Albemarle conceded first, then reeled off the next 13 goals en route to a 15-3 victory on Wednesday night.

Doug Tarring, the winningest high school lacrosse coach in state history, has ended his illustrious career after 37 years at St. Anne’s-Belfield.

Western Albemarle used two sizzling-hot performances to open each half to defeat Loudon County 21-8 in the Region II semifinals Monday night.

Up by just one goal with just a minute and a half to play, it’d seemed only fitting that many of St. Anne’s-Belfield’s marquee players came up with big plays.

Albemarle has been no stranger to close games this season, and the trend continued in the Patriots’ biggest game yet.

However the Western Albemarle girls lacrosse teamed looked particularly poised on Thursday evening, defeating Charlottesville 15-8 to win the Jefferson District championship.

But behind a gutsy performance by the Albemarle defense and a handful of clutch saves from goalkeeper Austin Sigler, the Patriots were able to slip past the Eagles 6-5 to advance to the championship game.

The result of Tuesday’s game wasn’t much different than Thursday’s, as after a tightly played first quarter, the Saints went on to score 17 unanswered goals to beat the Eagles 21-5.

The Eagles survived an evenly-matched, high-intensity battle with The Steward School that came down to the final seconds, 10-9.

For the last decade, the VIC boys lacrosse championship trophy has been Covenant property. That didn’t change on Saturday when the Eagles — coming in with a chip on their shoulder after Thursday’s loss to rival St. Anne’s-Belfield — outlasted Virginia Episcopal 13-9.

In a matchup between last year’s VIS Divison I and Division II boys lacrosse state champions, it was a one-sided affair as St. Anne’s-Belfield cruised past Covenant, 19-7.

Covenant dominated Blue Ridge Tuesday in the Virginia Independent Conference tournament semifinals, winning 17-4 on a rain-soaked field to move on to the title game.

The Saints got more than a handful on Friday afternoon from a young Tigers squad, but behind an outstanding show from Owen Van Arsdale and Andrew Crockett, the Saints walked away with the win, 14-9.

On Tuesday, the Warriors adopted that philosophy with an impressive offensive output and strong defensive showing in a 14-5 victory over visiting Covenant.

It certainly wasn’t high-octane lacrosse, but a three-goal surge by Albemarle in the first three minutes of the third quarter was enough to lift the Patriots to a 6-2 victory over Western Albemarle in a cross-county rivalry matchup Monday night.

“He makes me look so much better than I actually am,” St. Anne’s Andrew Crockett said. “He really does.”

It’s going to be a while before Western Albemarle’s Jeannette Fellows scores a bigger goal.

“He just showed his heart and determination out there today,” said Covenant coach Dave Breslin.

It may be early in the season, but the Albemarle boys lacrosse team has got itself out to a good jump in the Commonwealth District.

St. Anne’s-Belfield had to deal with both the rain and an angry St. Albans squad Friday afternoon as the Saints fell 12-9 to the Bulldogs.

Disappointed by a 10-7 loss over the weekend to Bishop Ireton, the Woodberry lacrosse team came into Tuesday’s match against Covenant with something to prove.

It wasn’t until the final minute of the first quarter that Andy Colberg was able to put Covenant on the board, but once he did, the Eagles poured it on to pick up the 12-3 victory.

St. Anne’s-Belfield scheduled the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland for a variety of reasons, but mostly to see some of the top talent in the nation.

This year Haws led a group of talented young players to a 15-3 record. In doing so, Western won both the Region II and Jefferson District Championships before falling in a 10-9 overtime loss to Loudon Valley in the quarterfinals of the VHSL state tournament.

In her senior year at Albemarle, Moss scored 76 goals, assisted on 38 others and led her team to the semifinals of the VHSL State Tournament.
