Bayliss, Manilla claim JD singles crowns

Western Albemarle’s tennis program added two more trophies to its case on Thursday in the Jefferson District singles championships.
Joey Manilla defeated Charlottesville’s Sam Barry in the boys final and Shannon Bayliss knocked off district player of the year Amanda Wagner from Monticello in the girls match.
“I thought Bayliss controlled the match from beginning to end,” Western girls coach Betsy Nugent said. “That was the best I’ve seen her play this year, which hopefully will help her in regional play.”
Softball: Buckingham County 18, Cumberland 0
Knights sophomore Javannah Taylor tossed a perfect game against the Dukes to lift her team to a perfect season.
Taylor struck out nine batters in the five-inning game. At the plate, she went 4 for 4 with a pair of two-run home runs and six RBI.
Buckingham’s Lisa Lee went 2 for 2 with a home run and Malika Davis went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBI.
Boys lacrosse: Blue Ridge 6, Roanoke Catholic 5
In the VIS Division III semifinals, the Barons came away with a 6-5 win over visiting Roanoke Catholic on Thursday to advance to the finals on Saturday at St. Anne’s-Belfield.
In the third, co-captains Miles Herbst and In-Woo Chung each scored to help the Barons hang on and will now face the Seton-Trinity winner in this weekend’s state championship.
First-year head coach Andrew Sheppe is confident that if his troops stick to their game plan, that they can hoist the trophy and celebrate after Saturday’s contest.
“We controlled the ball for the bulk of the game and we have success when we play with intensity and win the groundball battle,” he said. “If we can play good hustle lacrosse like we did today, then I think we’ll be fine.”
Girls tennis: Loudoun Valley 5, Albemarle 0
Albemarle’s girls’ tennis team fell 5-0 to Loudoun Valley in the Northwest Region semifinals, concluding its season at 20-1.
Seniors Morgan Watt, Victoria Yu and Kelly Anderson helped lead the Patriots to a 71-12 record over the past four seasons.
The season is not over for Anderson, as she will team up with her doubles partner, freshman Megan Napolitano, in the regional tournament next week at E.C. Glass.
Napolitano will also represent the Commonwealth District in the singles tournament as the No. 1 seed, also next week.
