In Goochland, top-seeded Covenant repeated as VISAA Division 2 girls soccer champions with a 2-0 victory over Tandem Friends at St. Catherine’s Goochland fields on Saturday.

Erin Hauser’s first-half goal and Lina Godine’s second half tally provided all the offense the Eagles (21-1-1) would need.

Hauser took a feed from Kelly Crispens in the 34th minute and shot low into the corner past Badgers goalkeeper Hannah Hellman for the eventual winner.

Godine, a defender, added an insurance goal five minutes into the second half off a corner kick. Nikki Holzman played the kick to Hannah Klein, who laid it off to set up Godine’s 25-yard shot.

“I thought she stopped breathing for a second when it went in,” said Covenant coach Pat Campbell. “It was a great strike.”

Hellman had eight saves for Tandem and Anna Gilliam had three for Covenant, which loses leading scorer Hauser and classmates Katie Estep, Emily Klein and Sarah Ameling.

“We’re losing four great seniors,” Campbell laughed. “I think people are going to wonder if I can really coach.”

Eagles repeat as boys tennis champs

Covenant swept all six singles matches against Virginia Episcopal to repeat as VIS Division 2 boys tennis champions on Saturday at Pen Park.

“I kind of threw them out on the court and they worked it out,” said Covenant coach Dave Dahnert. “They took care of business.”

Steve Cho and Lloyd Luck picked up victories over fellow first-team All-VIC picks Max Kaiser and Marsh Baker at the top two singles spots. Stephen Owen, John Inouye, Tyler Tulenko and Kevin Parker also had singles victories for the Eagles.

Western duo wins JD doubles title

Maddie Wilson and Sarah Nugent of Western Albemarle captured the Jefferson District doubles title on Friday with a win over Monticello’s Lizzy Gaffney and Mayo Rives.

The Warriors duo beat their Monticello counterparts, 6-1, 6-2, in the doubles final. Both teams advance to the Region II championships.

Earlier, Gaffney had beaten Wilson to pick up the district singles championship.
