Lions sweep track championships

Louisa County’s outdoor track teams continued their successful spring as they swept the Jefferson District championships on Wednesday.

The boys team collected 188.33 points in a dominating win, finishing well ahead of second-place Charlottesville (86). Western Albemarle was third.

The Lions used a balanced effort to come away with the crown.

Senior Tyler Jackson set the tone with wins in the 100 and 200 meters, and teammate Dante Davis won titles in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Andre Hunter was another multiple winner, taking first in the triple and long jumps. Lesley Waddy won the discus throw. Louisa swept all three relay events to maintain its sizeable lead.

Other highlights included Western Albemarle’s Tyler Stutzman, who won the 800 and 1,600 meters. Teammate Kyle Satterwhite was the top finisher in the 3,200. Charlottesville’s Justin Jackson won the high jump, while Monticello’s Marvin Mills was first in the 400 meters.

On the girls side, Louisa garnered 154 points to outdistance runner-up Western Albemarle (135). Fluvanna County took third place. The Lions relay teams performed well, picking up wins in the 4x100 (Jameshia Seabron, Michelle Best, Jasmyne Johnson, Kia Christmas) as well as the 4x400 (Christmas, Johnson, Nojai Veras, Imani Dugger).

Seabron, a sophomore, posted individual wins in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump. Other notable performances included Orange County’s Ashontae Jackson, who won the 200 and 400 meters; Western Albemarle’s Mattie Webb, who won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and Fluvanna County’s Precious Banks, who won the triple jump, 300-meter hurdles and took second in the long jump.

Louisa will host the Region II track meet next Wednesday.

Area athletes grab All-State honors

A pair of local basketball standouts have earned first team All-State accolades. Logan Terrell, who helped lead Madison County to the Group A semifinals was selected to the All-Group A first team. Terrell, a junior forward, averaged 16 points and seven rebounds for the Region B and Bull Run District champions, who won their first 28 games before falling to Dan River in the state tournament.

Charlottesville senior Shawntae Payne garnered first team All-Group AA honors as she guided the Black Knights back into the state tournament. Payne, a 5-foot-7 guard, averaged 20.9 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists for Charlottesville, which went 21-7 and advanced to the state semifinals.

Charlottesville’s Kevin Leatherwood and Orange County’s Quintin Hunter were named to the All-Group AA boys second team. Both athletes propelled their teams into the state tournament. Hunter is headed to UVa to play football while Leatherwood will play football at Norfolk State.

Catlin wraps up stellar college career

Devin Catlin played a major role in the final game of his lacrosse career at Kenyon College in Ohio, helping the Lords to a 12-6 win over the College of Wooster.

Catlin, a Western Albemarle graduate, had a pair of goals and an assist in the win. He finished his career with 213 points, which ranks second all-time at the school. Catlin also registered at least one point in all but two of the 57 games he played throughout his career. Catlin holds the school record with 114 assists and his 99 career goals rank ninth at Kenyon.
